The British Trolleybus Society became a registered charity in 1994. Being a registered charity entitles us to reclaim the amount of UK income tax or capital gains tax, which has been paid by a member, either on their membership subscription or as a donation to the Society. This helps boost the Society’s funds with a view to restoring and maintaining all its vehicles in working order.

Signing up to Gift Aid does not involve you in any additional outlay, just a couple of minutes to complete and return the Gift Aid Declaration form.

We do NOT contact your Inland Revenue office. We only submit a single annual claim with a list of names, without addresses or National Insurance Numbers.

These funds helped meet the unexpected additional costs incurred, of around £15,500, when the differential drive units failed and needed replacement on London Q1, number 1812. Work is currently being undertaken on Walsall 872 at Aston Manor Transport Museum. Our next major restoration project, in memory of preservation stalwarts Mike Dare and Geoff Griffiths, will be Cardiff 203. Securing tax refunds through Gift Aid will assist us in completing these projects.

Changes in legislation simplified Gift Aid from the beginning of the tax year 2000/01. It largely replaced Deeds of Covenant which had been the main way of recovering Income Tax previously. In the five years from 2000/01 reimbursement of tax paid by members or other donors has been received totalling £17,306.48 plus interest of another £868.14. We submitted a new claim to the Inland Revenue for 2005/06 year and this has now resulted in a further amount of over £5,600 (including interest) being received. This is the highest amount ever claimed by us and is obviously a significant contribution to our cash balances.

If you are an existing member or are joining the Society, please assist us by signing up to Gift Aid. It will add a further 28.2% to your subscription or donation. The Gift Aid declaration is for life, so you only need contact us if you become a non-tax payer, as we are not entitled to reclaim tax that you have not paid in any tax year.
